You enter your NGO’s PAN number, but the portal shows “Invalid PAN” or “Details not found.” This usually happens during the initial registration or when updating the “Key Member” profile. In 2026, this error is most commonly caused by a Status Mismatch or a Fresh Issue delay.

1. Check the “Entity Type” on your PAN Card
The most common reason for an “Invalid” status is that the PAN was issued under the wrong category.
-
The Rule: For NGO DARPAN, the 4th letter of your PAN must be ‘T’ (for Trust), ‘A’ (for Association of Persons), or ‘B’ (for Body of Individuals).
-
The Fix: If your PAN’s 4th letter is ‘P’ (Individual), the portal will reject it. You cannot register an NGO using a personal PAN. You must apply for a new PAN in the name of your Trust or Society.
2. The “30-Day Freshness” Rule
Did you recently register your NGO or get a new PAN?
-
The Issue: It takes time for the Income Tax database to sync with the NITI Aayog server.
-
The Fix: If your PAN was issued within the last 15 to 30 days, wait. The “Invalid” error often disappears automatically once the database updates. Avoid trying to register multiple times daily, as this can flag your PAN as “Suspicious.”
3. Verify PAN Status on e-Filing Portal
Before blaming the DARPAN portal, verify if the PAN is actually active in the government records.
-
Action: Go to the Income Tax e-Filing Portal.
-
Step: Use the ‘Verify Your PAN’ tool.
-
Result: If it says “PAN is Active and details are matching with Aadhaar,” then the problem is with the DARPAN server. If it says “Inactive,” you need to contact your CA to file your pending returns or update the KYC.
4. Name Matching (Spelling Matters)
The DARPAN portal compares the name you type with the name registered on the PAN card.
-
The Issue: Even a single space or a missing “The” can cause an error. For example, “The Helping Hand Trust” is not the same as “Helping Hand Trust.”
-
The Fix: Type the name EXACTLY as printed on the PAN card. Use all caps if it is in all caps on the card.
5. Clear Browser Cache & “Incognito” Method
Sometimes the error is simply a technical glitch in your browser.
-
Action: Open a new Incognito Window (Ctrl+Shift+N).
-
Why: This prevents the browser from using old, “cached” data that might be triggering the error message repeatedly.
🛠️ What if it still doesn’t work? (Manual Fix)
If you have verified that the PAN is active and the spelling is correct, but the error persists:
-
Take a Screenshot: Capture the error message and your PAN verification status from the Income Tax site.
-
Email NITI Aayog: Send an email to [email protected].
-
Subject: Urgent: Invalid PAN Error for [Your NGO Name]
-
Attach: Your PAN card scan and the Trust Deed/Registration Certificate. The technical team usually manually white-lists the PAN within 5-7 business days.
