Choosing your college on the GCAS 2026 portal is a high-stakes game. If you pick only the “famous” colleges and your marks aren’t high enough, you end up with no seat. If you pick the wrong “type” of college, you might end up paying triple the fees.

Here is the “ground reality” of the GCAS 2026 Choice Filling and the list of universities you need to know about.

In 2026, you aren’t just picking a college; you are picking a future. Under the GCAS umbrella, there are over 15 State Universities. But here’s the trick: each university has hundreds of colleges, and they aren’t all the same.

🏛️ The Big Players: Which University is for You?

Before you start clicking, identify which university covers your area or your dream course:

  • Gujarat University (Ahmedabad): The “Grandfather” of universities. If you want the best Commerce (B.Com) or Arts (B.A.) environment, this is it.

  • MSU Baroda (Vadodara): It’s an “Internationally” recognized name. Go here if you want a vibrant campus life and top-tier Science or Fine Arts departments.

  • VNSGU (Surat): The powerhouse for South Gujarat. Very strong in B.B.A and specialized Science courses.

  • Saurashtra University (Rajkot): Massive reach. If you are in the Rajkot/Jamnagar belt, this is your primary choice.

  • Sardar Patel University (V.V. Nagar): Known for being “disciplined” and having excellent academic results.

💰 The “Fee” Secret: Grant-in-Aid vs. Self-Financed

This is where most students make a mistake during choice filling.

  1. Grant-in-Aid / Government Colleges: These are funded by the Gujarat Government. Fees are very low (often under ₹2,000–₹5,000 per year). Competition is tough.

  2. Self-Financed (SF) Colleges: These are private colleges affiliated with the university. Fees can range from ₹15,000 to ₹50,000+ per year.

My Advice: Always put the Government/Grant-in-Aid colleges at the top of your list. If you don’t get in, the system will automatically look at your next choice (the SF colleges).

🛠️ How to Fill Your Choices Like a Pro

  1. Don’t Be Shy: Add at least 15 to 20 colleges. Why? Because if you only pick 3 and don’t make the cut, you’ll have to wait for the stressful “Round 2” or “Mop-up Round.”

  2. The “Locking” Trap: I’ve seen so many students fill the form and just close the tab. Stop! You must click the “Lock Choices” button. If you don’t lock it by the May 28th deadline, the portal thinks you haven’t finished, and you won’t get a seat anywhere.

  3. Check the Map: Before adding a college, just quickly check its location on Google Maps. You don’t want to get into a “Great College” that requires a 3-hour bus ride every day.

📅 The 2026 Calendar

  • Choice Filling Starts: May 7, 2026.

  • Last Date to Lock: May 28, 2026.

  • First Merit List: June 2, 2026 (Mark your calendars!).

💡 A Personal Tip for You

If your 12th percentage is between 60% and 75%, do not only fill out colleges in Ahmedabad or Vadodara city centers. Look at colleges in the “outskirts” or nearby towns like Gandhinagar, Anand, or Nadiad. The competition there is slightly lower, and you are much more likely to grab a “Grant-in-Aid” seat!

Need a specific list of B.Com or B.Sc colleges in your city? Tell me your District and your 12th Stream (Science/General) in the comments, and I’ll give you a “priority list” you can copy-paste into your GCAS form!
