The “Master Code” for All Retailers
If you run a general retail shop (grocery, clothing, electronics, etc.), your search should always start with Section G, specifically Division 47.
Follow this 3-step selection on the Udyam Portal:

Step 1 (2-Digit Code): Select 47 (Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles).

Step 2 (4-Digit Code): This depends on your specific shop type (see below).

Step 3 (5-Digit Code): Select the most specific description of your items.

What if I sell multiple things?
This is a common question in 2026. If you have a “General Store” selling both groceries and stationery:

Add the Primary NIC Code (the one that brings in the most money).

Click the “Add Activity” button on the Udyam portal.

Add the second NIC code.
You can add up to 10 different NIC codes on a single Udyam certificate!
Why “Retail Trade” is different in 2026
Remember: While retailers can get an Udyam certificate, the benefits are slightly restricted compared to manufacturers.

The Good News: You get access to Priority Sector Lending (PSL) from banks, meaning lower interest rates on business loans.

The Limitation: Retailers are usually excluded from certain “Manufacturing-only” subsidies. However, having the Udyam ID is still mandatory for the 45-day payment protection rule.
🛠️ Troubleshooting Tip: “Search Not Working?”
Sometimes the Udyam portal search bar is glitchy. Instead of typing “Grocery,” try typing just the number “4711” into the search box. This bypasses the text-search errors and brings up the category immediately.

Don’t let a 5-digit code stand between you and your MSME benefits. Most retail shops in India fall under Division 47. Once you select that, simply pick the sub-category that matches your main shelf stock.
