🛑 What’s New in 2026?

Before you apply, understand these three major changes:

  1. No Income Limit: You do not need to be on the “BPL” list. If you are 70+ years old (as per Aadhaar), you are eligible.

  2. The “Top-Up” Rule: If your family is already covered under Ayushman Bharat, the senior citizen gets an extra, exclusive ₹5 Lakh top-up that they don’t have to share with the rest of the family.

  3. Vay Vandana Branding: The card for seniors has a distinct look and is called the Vay Vandana Card for priority processing at hospitals.

🛠️ How to Apply Online (Using the Ayushman App)

The government recommends using the Ayushman App rather than the website, as the app allows for Face Authentication, which is much easier for seniors whose fingerprints might have faded.

Step 1: Login

  • Download the Ayushman App (NHA) from the Play Store.

  • Select ‘Beneficiary’ (not Operator).

  • Enter your mobile number and the OTP you receive.

Step 2: Search for Eligibility

  • Select your State.

  • Select the Scheme: PM-JAY.

  • Select ‘Search By’: Aadhaar Number.

  • Enter the senior citizen’s Aadhaar Number.

Step 3: Start the e-KYC

  • The system will show the name if they are in the database. If not, look for the “Add Member/70+ Application” button.

  • Choose ‘Face Auth’ for verification. The app will open the camera—just hold the phone steady in front of the senior citizen.

Step 4: Upload Photo and Details

  • Take a live photo of the applicant.

  • Fill in the mobile number, relation to the head of the family, and PIN code.

  • Important: In 2026, you must also link the ABHA ID (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) during this step. If they don’t have one, the app will generate it automatically.

Step 5: Download the Card

  • Once submitted, the “Vay Vandana” card is usually approved within 24 to 48 hours.

  • You can then log back in and click ‘Download Card’. Print this in color and laminate it.

🔍 Common Problems & Fixes (2026 Update)

  • “Aadhaar Mismatch”: If the name on the Aadhaar doesn’t match the Ration Card, the application will fail. You must first update the Ration Card at your local Food Supply office or via the state portal.

  • “Unauthorized Access” Error: I’ve noticed this happens if you are using an old version of the app. As of May 5, 2026, make sure you are using Version 5.2 or higher.

  • Already have CGHS/ECHS? You have a choice. You can either stay with your current scheme or switch to Ayushman 70+. You cannot use both simultaneously for the same treatment.

🏛️ Offline Option: Ayushman Arogya Mandir

If the online process feels too technical, seniors can simply walk into any Ayushman Arogya Mandir (formerly Health & Wellness Centers) or a registered government hospital with their Aadhaar Card and Ration Card. A dedicated “Ayushman Mitra” will complete the registration for free.
